He was murdered by, well, no one knows, but   people suspect mobsters. I didn't know he owned Cadillacs, but as a   successful star and signer, he would have had a fine ride.

The car we see here does not belong to the French singer but to the late "Nudie", the colorful owner of  a Hollywood fashion house that caters to the Hollywood set.  It is a westernized Eldorado convertible model of circa 1975, that sports a pair of long horns on the front grille

In the archives of the Antwerp Gazette for 1957 was found this photo of what appears to be the 1953-54 custom PF roadster assumed to have been commissioned by Luigi Chinetti,
NY Ferrari importer. The accompanying article tells how King Leopold III of Belgium ran off the road [#SS51] on his way to Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Italian Alps. There is a photo of
the upturned car (below). I find it hard to believe that this is NOT the PF custom job; I doubt PF made TWO the same. In that case, did the King buy it from Chinetti (unlikely!); so we assume the
car was retrieved, restored and then sold to Chinetti. The other remaining question is this: why did the "royal" accident never make world headlines?  I imaginethe incident was kept very
hush-hush because the King was involved once before in a similar tragedy when a car he was driving went off the road near Kussnacht, in Switzerland, in 1934, killing Queen Astrid, his wife.

Offered for sale on eBay in March, 2006, this 1970 Cadillac Limousine is reported to have been used by Jerry Lee Lewis in the early 70's.  The car was bought new at Price Motors Pontiac-Cadillac in Morristown, TN, by racing driver Rod Long.

Guy's career began in 1924 and spanned some 50 years.  The band sold over 100,000 million records. "The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven" was the logo of Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians.  By 1930 thne band had established themselves as America's top dance band.   Guy died in 1977.

 

 

Loren, Sophia

Sophia is reported to have owned this 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham; however, I have no official record nor any photo of her with such a car. The photo was supplied kindly by the car's current owner, Chris Bonzi.  It features neither of the two standard trim designs for the 1959 Eldorado Brougham, although the door panel and seat back design look correct (except that the seat back clock appears to be covered over with a piece of upholstery)

MacArthur, Douglas (General) [1]
[WW2 hero]

1937 Cadillac Series 90 V16 custom town car

This car  was custom-built by General Motors for the first president of the (former) Commonwealth of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon [see below].  In 1938, the President gave the vehicle to General MacArthur as a gift for helping to train and organize the military of the (former) Commonwealth government.   MacArthur used the Cadillac throughout his tour of duty in the Philippines, until the outbreak of WWW2.    

After spending decades on display at Corregidor Islands, where it became much deteriorated from long exposure to sea air,  the car was shipped back to Quezon City to form part of the memorabilia collection honoring former president Quezon.

General MacArthur's 1937 Cadillac V16 town car was fully restored by the Vintage Car Club of the Philippines.   Only two such town cars cars were built on gthe "Sixteen" chassis in 1937.  the general's car is the only one still running today.  It was also said that GM funded part of the restoration during the mid 70s at a cost of $25,000.

1955 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 75 limousine

This car was retired from service in the sixties; it  was taking up too much room at the Malacañang Palace compound (the President's official residence). The National Museum eventually took custody of the car and displayed in the dungeons of a nearby, former 16th century fort, built by the Spaniards during that rule. It  remained there for the next thirty years until it was evicted once again in the late eighties.  Brute strength was used to lift the car out and the it suffered considerable damage. Thereafter, it was left to deteriorate in the open.  Eventually, the car was rescued by the Vintage Car Club of the Philippines and fully restored.

Although it has many features of the 1952 Golden Anniversary models, this is in fact a 1951 model.
It is a specially trimmed 1951 Series 62 convertible, style #6267XS [I have not seen this style number
before, on any 1951 Cadillac listings]. The "X" indicates it was fitted with power windows and the
"S" that it was probably a special order.  The car is still in India (4/2001]

 

The gilded "V" and crest of the 1952 Golden Anniversary Cadillac models
is confusing, as is the 1952 winged emblem below the headlights

She was known to love the color pink.  Her cars were pink, her  pool was pink, she bathed in pink
champagne.  Sadly, around 2.30 a.m. on  June 29, 1967 her driver lost control of the car in which she was a
passenger (no, not this car!) and she was killed instantly when it got embedded under a truck on U.S. route  90

Tiny Ann May (5'2" tall) was born in Cincinnati, where she studied dramatic art at the Schuster-Martin School.
She had a Latina looks, black curly hair and sparkling black eyes.  Ann May was discovered while she was visiting
the Beverly Hills Hotel, near Hollywood, Calif.  Jerome Storm engaged her for Ninon, the Parisienne in "Paris Green,"
then for "Peaceful Valley" with Charles Ray. Cecil B. DeMille subsequently engaged her for his greatest 1929
production. Her success in the movies allowed her to buy from Don Lee, in Hollywood, this exceptional sport phaeton
with secondary cowl and windshield designed by the great Harley Earl. Outside of the movies, her ambition, she boasted,
was to break all records as a racer in motoring and aviation.

McQueen, Steve

His sons, Terry and Chad, disposed of many

Mr. Mitchell, of Prussian origin, attended the public schools of Visalia and also the San Jose Business College, graduating in the latter institution.  After a 3-year stint as Deputy Postmaster of Visalia, he was appointed Postmaster General by President Cleveland. He later resigned to accept the position of cashier with Harrell & Son, Bankers.  The Mitchell's built a beautiful home on the corner of School and Locust streets in Visalia.  He was one-time treasurer of the Board of Trade of Visalia, secretary of the Fifteenth District Agricultural Association, and a member of the common council of the city.  He was a charter member of the Parlor of Native Sons of the Golden West.

This car was originally the property of Spanish aristocrat Jaime de Mora y Aragón. In more recent years it was used in a music video clip entitled Cadillac Solitario ("Lonely Cadillac") by Loquillo y Trogloditas.  My initial English translation was : Little Loco [crazy guy] and the Troglodytes.  However, a Latino visitor to the Database corrected me (in May, 2006), explaining that "Loquillo" was in fact cartoonist Walter Lantz' Woody Woodpecker ; so in simple English, the band's name would be Woody Woodpecker and the Cave Dwellers.  In August 2001, this car was on
display at Barcelona's Lilla mall, in Spain, with five other classics from the collection of Mr. Ramón Magriñá

Offered for sale on eBay [Internet] in December, 2003, this car is said to have been custom built by the Wolfington Body Company of Philadelphia for former Secretary of the Treasury, Henry P. Morganthau.  It has several unique features including cowl-mounted running lights, nickel plated drum headlights with custom brackets and a plated grill shell with Mr. Morganthau's initials instead of the usual Cadillac emblem in that location

In 1958, Syria and  Egypt were united under the banner of  the
United Arab Republic.  Syrians and Egyptians alike were called to vote
on February 21, 1958 for the creation of the new republic, with Nasser
as its president.  After the founding ceremony, the two leaders, Nasser
and Qu'watli, paraded through the streets of Damascus aboard this
custom convertible sedan. Unfortunately, the union of Egypt and Syria
as one great Arab nation was to last only until the summer of 1961
when  a Syrian military junta decided to beak away from the "republic"
and to create  a new and independent  Syrian Arab Republic,
free of any Egyptian control or influence

Nasser led the army coup that deposed the late King Farouk [another Cadillac aficionado].  In May 1964, the Aswan high dam over the Nile was inaugurated in the presence of Nasser and Soviet Premier, Nikita Kruchchev (the dam was Soviet-designed, built and financed). As the parade Cadillac made its way slowly through the throngs of onlookers, a female admirer of Nasser threw herself across the hood of the car,  causing quite a panic among the security guards (photo)

Unfortunately, this entry must serve also as an obituary notice. Sadly, the acclaimed fashion photographer died January 23, 2004 after he lost control of his silver Cadillac SRX in a Los Angeles hotel driveway; his car struck a wall and Newton died later in hospital; he  was 83.   His work appeared in Playboy, Elle and Vogue.  He was best known for his black-and-white studies of nude women.

This text accompanied some photos of a car that was offered for sale on eBay in December, 2003:
I was told this 1974 Fleetwood Talisman  was purchased by President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixion [sic] after his resignation from the Presidency for their use and was kept at their home in San Clemente, CA. I have not
been able to verify this through the DMV, but there is a plaque on the dash board staiting [sic] such.

I had a special plaque like this engraved for my '67 Mustang;
I could also have had it engraved "Custom Made for Elvis Presley"

Rumor has it that Frank owned a 1942 Series 75, style 7519, 7-pass.  sedan:
it was offered for sale on e-Bay in November, 2002. There were NO bidders,
possibly on account of the non-authentic restoration of the interior.

205 units were built, as against only 65 units for our "formal" version
(Hey, maybe OUR car is the Nitti car!)

"Nudie" has passed on.  He was the colorful owner of  a Hollywood fashion house that catered to the Hollywood and variety set. Among his creations was Elvis Presley's gold lamé tuxedo in the late fifties.  His car was this wild, westernized Eldorado convertible model that  sported, inter alia, a pair of long horns on the front grille, Winchester carbines on the trunk and rear fenders, holsters and six-guns draped over the back of the front seats. Silver dollars studded the hard boot [see also Le Fever entry]
